Review of Nick Marks’ The Baby Boomers Guide to Online Income: Don’t Take Retirement Sitting Down.
Prominent Internet entrepreneur Nick Marks takes dead aim at the largest segment of Western society today with The Baby Boomers Guide to Online Income. Best known for his Forex Enterprise income generation system, Marks’ latest offering is a primer for boomers who want to use the Internet to build their retirement nest egg.
A nest egg often promised but rarely delivered by lifelong employment and the infamous J-O-B…
It’s no secret that financial independence is at or near the top of every Baby Boomer’s list of life goals. People keep telling you that the Internet is the place to be, but you need tangible proof that it’s right for you. Marks allays our deepest fears and prejudices about online marketing by introducing success stories like eBay, Amazon.com, Google, and YouTube – Internet-based companies that are at the forefront of today’s digital economy.
Far from expecting readers to create the next Google (although you could!), Nick gently introduces the concept of niche marketing to readers, and explains how it is a boomer’s best chance to succeed online:
Find a targeted group of likeminded people who are prepared to spend money on products and services that you, and ideally ONLY you can offer and demonstrate undeniable passion for.
Let’s have some straight talk: Far from being the refuge of hucksters and scam artists, real Internet Marketing takes knowledge and best practices from “bricks and mortar” companies and adapts them to the online world using start-of-the art technology. Don’t be overwhelmed by the technology, though. Learn the business first; technology is merely a facilitator that you can learn as you proceed, or outsource if you so choose.
Nick presents several examples of how to proceed with your online business, with an emphasis on information products and affiliate marketing (N.B. The third option, physical products, can also be profitable, but requires much more time and capital investment).
As an expert affiliate marketer himself, Marks justifies the use of pre-selling pages for both list-building and sales generation purposes. Your website, especially for personal selling, is your “business card in the online world”. To prevent “Analysis Paralysis” and the usual fears that prevent us from moving ahead, Nick devotes two pages to website creation options. Truly one of the best parts of the book.
What gives Marks an edge over other “BizOpp” marketers is his breakdown of your personal needs and advice on how to build your online business from the ground up:
- Establish your income goals.
- Find a niche that shapes and inspires you.
- The five most important criteria people use when buying online.
- Niche brainstorming, keyword research hints, and the “Virtual Bookshelf”.
- Use free Web 2.0 tools to establish a meaningful Internet presence.
- The three most common Article Marketing styles.
- How to succeed with classical promotion methods like Forum marketing.
Nick even offers a technique for finding online forums on your specific topic. Very powerful stuff - I did not even know about this one!
Content is indeed King, and mastering “information brokerage” skills is what separates successful Internet Marketers from the rest. The Baby Boomers Guide to Online Income includes resource links and references geared to making you a better online entrepreneur. However, like Nick says, resources (and theory) without action is just plain useless…
Chapter 6 presents the case for creating information products. In addition to e-books, Nick discusses multimedia options (audio, video) in down-to-earth terms. As a proponent of multiple streams of income, Marks illustrates a possible scenario that may appear far-fetched at first but should really hit home once you put your own ideas into practice.
At fifty-four pages, The Baby Boomers Guide to Online Income is a short, concise read laying out information marketing’s various components in easy-to–digest terms. You’ll be able to get through it in a couple of hours, then use it over and over again as a reference. Baby Boomers are at the stage of their lives where supplemental income sources may mean the difference between a comfortable retirement and subsistence living. Nick Marks shows you vital steps that you must follow to ensure your financial independence.
Experienced online marketers may find Marks’ material generic and repetitive. However, a certain amount of redundancy often helps clarify and reinforce concepts that 98% of people take for granted. By the way, these are probably the same 98% who fail to generate regular income online because they do not learn and implement best practices into their Internet businesses.
It would be foolhardy to suggest that a single e-book can catapult you towards a more secure future. Yet, successful online entrepreneurs – Boomers and non-boomers alike – know that self-education is the first step towards a better tomorrow. With The Baby Boomers Guide to Online Income, Nick Marks steps away from being a stereotypical guru to offer something that budding Internet entrepreneurs can surely relate to.
